Agriculture across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is becoming increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including drought, land degradation, and the spread of pests, challenges that are further exacerbated by unsustainable agricultural practices. In this context, Agritech4Egypt, implemented by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, aims to foster the development, scaling, and adoption of science- and technology-based innovations for Egypt’s agri-food sector and the wider region.
Through a structured series of Innovation Challenges, Agritech4Egypt addresses five strategic areas of agribusiness: digitalization and precision agriculture; agri-finance solutions; sustainable value chains and the circular economy; farmer advisory and training services; and efficient irrigation and water management. The initiative places particular emphasis on youth entrepreneurship, with the objective of increasing the productivity, competitiveness, and resilience of the agricultural sector.
To achieve this, the project supports start-ups and innovation teams through technical assistance, tailored financial instruments, and business mentoring, providing concrete opportunities to develop, test, and scale innovative solutions.
In the medium and long term, the initiative aims to generate employment, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen rural communities, with particular attention to young people and women. Its approach is designed to create a multiplier effect across the agri-food sector by promoting locally adapted technologies and fostering innovation that starts with strengthening start-ups and translates into tangible impact on the ground.
By combining innovation with inclusiveness, Agritech4Egypt contributes to generating lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits while reducing future vulnerabilities of the agri-food system and reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional hub for sustainable agricultural innovation.
